What's a Crested Gecko?

The Crested Gecko, also known as the “Eyelash Gecko,” is a lizard in the gecko infraorder, that features distinctive rows of spiny protrusions on its head and above its eyes. These rows of small spikes are where it gets its common name. Geckos are found in warm climates, on every continent except Antarctica. Most species, including the Crested Gecko, lack eyelids and can’t blink, and so they are sometimes seen cleaning their eyes with their tongues. Many gecko species are also known for their sticky toe-pads that let them cling to most vertical surfaces.

What Makes the Crested Gecko Special?

Crested Geckos grow between six and ten inches, which includes the tail that can make up over half of their total length. Their heads are large and diamond shaped, with two rows of small spiny structures that begin above their eyes, continue around the head in a kind of “crown”, and proceed to run down the back of the lizard in parallel ridges, before ending near the tail.

Crested Geckos, like many other lizard species, have the ability to remove their tail if attacked by a predator, without causing serious lasting harm to the gecko. However, unlike many lizards, Crested Gecko tails do not grow back once dropped off. Many Crested Geckos found in the pet trade do not possess tails.

In the wild, Crested Geckos come in many colors, including grey, brown, orange, yellow, and red. In captivity, many different specialty colorations are bred, including geckos with “pinstripes”, “dalmatian spots,” and “harlequin” patterns. Crested Geckos are currently one of the most common gecko species kept as pets, second only to the Leopard Gecko.

Where are Crested Geckos Found?

Crested Geckos are only found in the South Province of New Caledonia, a series of islands in the South Pacific to the east of Australia. They are currently considered Vulnerable and have protected status, which prohibits further export of wild geckos for the pet trade. However, prior to these restrictions, many breeding lines had been established for captive geckos, which allows the gecko pet trade to continue without taking wild geckos from their natural habitat.
