Halflings are humanoid creatures that feature in a large number of fantasy stories for nearly a century.
Though they are known by many other names, "halfling" best describes these diminutive characters. In fantasy tales and fictional universes, halflings are often shown as similar to humans, but shorter and hairier, particularly on their feet. They typically like to keep to themselves and lead simple, leisurely lives, farming and living off the land. They are known to be quiet and able to travel undetected by taller races if they desire.
The word "halfling" has roots in the Scots language word "hauflin", which describes a stage of growth between childhood and adulthood, and thus are halfway between each.
Halflings feature in many fantasy tales, as well as tabletop and video games.
