Back in early 1970, you didn’t hear very much about conservation and protecting the environment. Pollution of the land, air and sea was just an accepted reality, a necessary sacrifice in the name of industrial progress.
But in spring of that year, the seeds of change were planted. The very first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22nd, and the tradition has continued every year since then. Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson was inspired to take action for the environment after a disastrous Calfornia oil spill in 1969. He seized upon the energy of the tumultuous times to stage the first “National Teach-in on the Environment”, which would become what we know today as Earth Day.
On that day in 1970, 20 million people participated in rallies to raise awareness of our need to protect the natural world around us. By the end of that year, the Environmental Protection Agency had been created, and laws had been passed to protect the planet, including the Endangered Species Act. The American public have been spurred to act, and suddenly issues like conserving our wildlife and ensuring the quality of our air and water were at the forefront of national discourse.
In 1990 the movement would become global, and Earth Day became known as a day of action and awareness across the world, with 192 countries officially recognizing this holiday. For almost 50 years, Earth Day has strived to mobilize the people living on this planet to fight and work to protect it and its resources.
For Safari Ltd®, this cause is very close to our heart. We create detailed, scientifically accurate animal figurines because the natural world is not just our business, but our passion. We are dedicated to the idea of educating the public about these animals, as well as raising awareness of the need to protect them. In addition, we are committed to making a difference in the form of philanthropic contributions to local and global conservation efforts including the Nature Conservancy, the Sierra Club, the Mote Marine Laboratory, and many more.
Safari Ltd® is also focused on sustainable “green” practices in the workplace. Some of our initiatives we practice at our facility include:
This Earth Day, celebrate with us and do your part for the planet. Go out there and make a difference!
